  8. Congratulations for ordering The Draftsman, an easy-to-learn, easy to use
  9. package for producing presentation-quality charts, graphs, and simple illustra-
  10. tions. I designed the program and am marketing it now as "freeware"; Jan Gombert
  11. wrote the program while working for my firm. It is the same program we once sold
  12. for $200.
  13.  
  14. It is "freeware", meaning that you may use it without charge, you are encouraged
  15. to share it with others, but all users are encouraged to send a donation to help
  16. offset development costs. I have enclosed an invoice. If you do not feel that
  17. the program is worth $25, please ignore the invoice. Otherwise, please send a
  18. check for $25 to David Stang, 3631 Jenifer St. NW, Washington DC 20015. Please
  19. distribute the program to anyone you feel might appreciate it.

  21. Let me tell you briefly about the key features of The Draftsman.
  22.  
  23.  1. Data Input. Data input formats include DIF, comma-delimited files,
  24.     Draftsman-maintained data storage files, and keyboard input. Moving your
  25.     numbers from dBase III or 1-2-3 is quick and straight-forward.
  26.  
  27.  2. Many Graph Types. The Draftsman can generate pies and exploded pies, stacked
  28.     or cluster bar charts, scatter plots, and line graphs. Each graph may be
  29.     sized and moved, and several may be placed on the same screen.

  31.  3. A Complete Manual on Disk. The manual contains a table of contents, an
  32.     index, explanations of error messages, instructions for configuring the
  33.     program to run on your hard disk, and much more.
  34.  
  35.  4. Edit Mode. The edit mode allows you to simply draw on the screen, using a
  36.     mouse if desired. Any chart may be edited and embellished. In edit mode,
  37.     organizational charts, flow charts, and the like are all possible.

  39.  5. Output. A slideshow mode allows you to present any sequence of slides, at
  40.     any interval desired, or to advance to the next slide (or any specific
  41.     slide) with a key press. Epson and compatible printers, and the HP 7470
  42.     plotter are supported for hard copy.

  44.  6. User Support. Context-sensitive help is as close as a function key, enabling
  45.     you to answer questions that may be unclear from the screen prompts. In
  46.     addition, The Draftsman comes with a manual (on the disk) offering 42 pages
  47.     of text and figures, 3 pages of table of contents, and 5 pages of index. A
  48.     24-hour bulletin board (202) 537-1025, operating at 300/1200 baud, offers
  49.     free support to users.

  51.  7. Hardware Requirements. The Draftsman requires a PC or compatible with 128K
  52.     (192K is recommended), a floppy drive (two drives or a hard disk are
  53.     recommended), and a color or monochrome monitor connected to an IBM-
  54.     compatible graphics card. An HP 7470 plotter or Epson printer is recommended
  55.     for hard copy.

  64. ps. To install it, simply boot your system, insert the enclosed disk in drive
  65. A:, a formatted floppy in drive B:, and type INSTALL. This will create a working
  66. disk you can run by placing it in drive A: and typing DRAWMAN.

  68. To print the manual, put the enclosed disk in drive A:, turn on your printer,
  69. and type PRINTMAN.
